Word study is a daily component of balanced literacy. Work done in word study should transfer into students’ independent reading and writing. Word study over a week would include students learning high frequency and/or sight words that will be added to a class word wall and personal words pulled from student writing and investigations. Students are expected to read and write high freqency words with automaticity. Sight words are to be read with automaticity. With that said, there may be cross-over between high frequency and sight words at times. Word study may be based in phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, vocabulary development, and written and oral language conventions: spelling, grammar, usage, and mechanics.
